Sedation dentistry helps patients manage anxiety or fear around dental procedures. At QE2 Dental, we offer conscious sedation, which means you’ll remain awake but feel deeply relaxed throughout your treatment.
We use either:
Oral sedation – a medication taken in pill or liquid form before your appointment.
Intravenous (IV) sedation – medication administered directly into the bloodstream for faster and deeper relaxation.
Our main sedative medication is midazolam, a
well-established and predictable relaxant that has
been shown to be safe and effective when administered under professional care.
Comfortable and stress-free experience
Reduces fear, anxiety, and sensitivity to pain
Ideal for longer or complex procedures
Our team includes highly trained dentists who are qualified by the New Zealand Society for Sedation in Dentistry to administer sedation safely. Our caring dental assistants are also trained to support patients during sedation and monitor your wellbeing throughout your appointment.
We also accept referrals from other dentists or specialists who do not offer sedation. If you require specific treatments under sedation, we can provide this service while you continue seeing your regular dental provider.
You can often combine multiple treatments in one visit
Suitable for people with a strong gag reflex or previous traumatic dental experiences
We’ll discuss your health history and anxiety level, then determine the right sedation option for you. Yes, a consultation is required so the dentist can assess your medical condition and dental needs to come up with the safest and most effective treatment plan. There are also important instructions to follow before your sedation appointment.
Consultation
For oral sedation, we’ll give you instructions about when and how to take your medication. For IV sedation, you’ll receive it once you’re seated and ready.
3. During Treatment – You’ll feel deeply relaxed, drowsy, and calm. You may drift in and out of light sleep, but you’ll remain responsive and able to follow instructions.
Before the Appointment
You’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. No driving or carrying out important tasks should be done for the next 24 hours. Most people recover from sedation within a few hours.
