We know hearing “root canal” can sound daunting — but this trusted procedure can relieve pain, save your natural tooth, and help you keep your smile healthy.

Root canal treatment

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment (also called endodontic therapy) is performed when the inside of your tooth — the pulp — becomes inflamed or infected. This can happen due to deep decay, repeated dental work, an old filling leaking close to the nerve, or a crack or injury.

THE ROOT CANAL PROCESS

A crown or strong filling is placed to protect and reinforce the tooth. For most teeth, a crown is recommended for durability and function.

Crown or
Restoration

Your dentist will examine your tooth, take x-rays if needed, and discuss your symptoms and treatment options.

Examination

Local anaesthetic is given so you stay comfortable. The tooth is prepared and kept dry and clean throughout
the procedure.

Preparation

A small opening is made to remove the damaged pulp. The root canals are then cleaned, shaped
and disinfected.

Cleaning the
Root Canals

The canals are filled with a biocompatible material and sealed to prevent reinfection.
